WordPress Discounts and Offers for Non-Profit Organisations

This page is a summary of free and discounted hosting, and premium WordPress plugin discounts, that are available exclusively for non-profit organisations (themes will be added if I find any). I know the importance of financial planning and accountability when undertaking projects, so I hope this page may provide useful information, especially as these discounts often aren’t advertised as widely or as publicly as the standard discounts. I strongly discourage basing any purchasing decisions on offered discounts alone, and in fact I would always recommend that you try out the free versions of plugins first to see if you really need a paid version at all. You may find this page helpful though when shortlisting your options, and in your considerations of cost alongside other requirements such as features and support. Wherever I know that an offer is lifetime, I have included that information, but please always do your own research and ask developers questions to make sure that you are not going to be hit with a significant rise in price after the first year.

Please note that the hosting and plugins appearing in this list do not amount to my endorsement of them. Some of them I use and would highly recommend, and I have included many other popular choices too. I do not benefit in any way (directly or indirectly) from your purchase of any of the resources listed here. None of the links are affiliate links and any purchases are your sole responsibility and completely independent of WP in the Community.

Hosting

In addition to cost, factors to take into account when choosing hosting include performance, security, uptime, customer support and scalability. Offers of free hosting may be very tempting and could be everything that your site needs. It would seem there is nothing to lose by trying it, but think carefully about what happens if the needs of your site outgrow your current hosting plan, whatever type of hosting you start with. If a domain is included as part of the hosting plan, what might the costs be if you need to change host? If you are going to rely solely on your host’s mailbox, do you have the ability to move those emails if you move your site? If you’re buying a multiyear contract, is that contract likely to still be right for you in a few year’s time? Asking the hosting support these types of question, along with asking about things like their security and maintenance routines, will help you to assess what is on offer and is also a good test of how good the customer support is.

Plugins

A paid plugin is not necessarily any better than a free plugin. It’s only going to be better for you if it has the features that you want and fit your needs. There are some very feature-rich and good quality free plugins, whilst conversely there can be some less good quality paid plugins. It is always worthwhile taking the time to do thorough research. Not only might it save you in costs, but it might save you in time and headaches further down the road too. Some important considerations when choosing plugins include:

What are my requirements and which features do I need?
There are some very good free plugins that are rich in features, whilst other free plugins can be limited and encourage you to move to a paid version very quickly. If after researching you don’t find a free plugin that exactly meets your needs, it’s then time to ask if you can do without that feature or if you need to consider pro plugins.
Do I already have a plugin installed that can provide the same features?
Look for solutions in your current plugins and never install plugins with overlapping features as this can cause conflicts.
Does the plugin receive regular updates?
Less complex plugins require updates less often but if a plugin hasn’t been updated in the last six months, I would be cautious. If no updates have been released in the last year I would not recommend you install the plugin. Check the changelogs too for a wider picture of how regularly the plugin is updated.
Does the plugin have good ratings and reviews?
Especially take into consideration the recent reviews. Is the plugin performing as well now as it was in the past?
Is the plugin well documented?
Documentation can be vital for getting the most out of a plugin and preventing frustrations. A plugin with clear and up-to-date documentation is often the sign of a high quality plugin.
Does the plugin have good support?
Check the support forums to see whether support requests are dealt with in a timely manner and to a sufficient standard. Are there any community forums or Facebook groups for providing peer-to-peer support?
